I've Always Wanted An Afro, But...
April 03, 2008
Right now, a Super 8 Motel has better amenities than my own bathroom. Well, maybe not better, since I doubt they have Tea Tree Oil-infused organic shampoo or Purity face wash or framed Picasso ink sketches lining the wall. But what Super 8 does have, I’m coveting. And that’s a working hair dryer. Mine broke last week, which means that in one day I went from perfect curls to frizzy strands of, well, frizz. And frizzy ones, at that, in case I wasn’t clear.

Over the past week my hair styles have ranged from a low pony tail to a messy bun. And one day, just to switch it up a bit, I wore a high ponytail (with ribbon!), since pulling all my hair back is the only way to hide my airrant locks. (Har, har!)
I haven’t purchased a new hair dryer in a long time – maybe 10 years? And I’m assuming that in the last 10 years manufacturers have come out with all kinds of new-fangled designs and features. Which is where you come in! This is what I need:
- Must fit a standard diffuser attachment (or come with one)
- Must have a high and low heat setting
I’m pretty low-maintenance. Do you have any suggestions? Do you like a particular brand? Have a hair dryer you swear by? Are there certain functions or features I should be on the lookout for? Or is there just one that you think is really pretty? (All I'm saying is, I won't complain if it’s hot pink, that's all.)

Why not make a statement while doing your hair?... Let everyone know you are not someone to trifle with. When it comes to hair, you mean business!

At this moment, I have to say I am thankful for my dreadfully straight locks..... always wanted curly but I never have to fret if my dryer is on the fritz or if I have slept late. My hair pretty well always looks the same, done or undone... ;)
I think I generally stick with ConAir.... you know, cause it was cool in the 80s and all.... and also a movie name which is double score, right?
(note you have an advertisement link for hairdryers on your page!!)

I love your artwork, Jes, as always.
I don't use a hair dryer, but everyone I know swears by the Elchim. Of course, they're trying to get their hair straight, not curly, so it might not be even a slightly relevent recommendation.

Ooooh! I love Roger's suggestion.

You're going to hate me but my hair is stick straight even after air-drying (which is my method most days). When I do have to blow-dry it, I just use the crappy one I always have and I know nothing more about it than it's blue and blows hot air. (Or cold air, too, for that matter.)
Love the drawing though ;)

I'm ALL about the tourmaline ionic dryers.. I've got an older version (circa 2005) of this dryer and I love it. Before you faint, I have some "connections" and didn't pay anywhere close to the price listed. But damn if it doesn't dry my hair faster and give me less frizz.

Being the fruggal girl I am, did a little research and it looks like Revlon has a good product for $29.99. Much better.

I'm a stylist and this dryer changed my life. It truly does dry the hair smoother and faster. I've had mine for about 6 years and I could not live without it (the price reflects the quality). I have the red one, but you could probably get by with the black as you're not drying hair all day long.

I bought a Solano dryer about 8 years ago and it's worked great. It switches from Cold to Warm to Hot, Low and High. I also like that the back end unscrews so you can clean the dust filter. I bought a standard filter thing that goes on the end for curly headed gals (can't remember what that's called) from a drug store and it fit on the nozzle. It has a nice long cord, which I like. I can't remember which model it is, but it's worked great over the years. I spent around $100 for it.

I'm one of the stick straight hair girls after air drying. Don't use a dryer. Don't hate me. Cuz I wish my hair had some curl and body. Everyone wants what they don't have.

ConAir Curl Fusion dryer is small, lightweight, and comes with a diffuser. It's a bit flat, though, so it might not be good if you want to have longer hair, but for your currrent length, it'll be great. I've used it myself, and I find it's great for curls.

I am surprisingly low maintenance about this. Sally Beauty Supply has a great selection.

Okay, I disagree with Lia, Roger's suggestion downright scares me! I could not point that at my head and pull the trigger. Is that your Roger? If Scuba suggested it to me I might wonder if we needed counseling...

BEDHEAD has a really pretty one that lights up while you use it (in case you're in the dark?) but what I really want for my frizz-prone locks is one of those "ion" dryers. It supposedly blows positively charged ions into your hair so that you won't have static.
Amazing!

Umm, I am still using the hairdryer I got on my 12th or 13th birthday, which was back in the '80's. Seriously. I just googled it and am SHOCKED to learn that they make an updated version. http://www.folica.com/Curly_Top_Diffu_d1410.html

Hi,
De-lurking here to help a fellow curly. Diffusers make my hair look like your drawing on the right so I "plop" my hair in the mornings. It might work for you until you find a diffuser you like. It makes my curls nice and uniform.

Plopping is good. Plop my dear. Plop.
